Mary is running for her fourth term on the Town Council, where she works to deliver responsible budgets, a quality education system, and town services that benefit everyone.

Professionally, Mary is a Sr. Director of Data Engineering at Travelers, where she manages IT budgets, personnel, and development efforts. She brings that experience and perspective to the Town Council. She also previously served on the Zoning Board of Appeals in another town. Mary and her family moved to Glastonbury 15 years ago, and they are proud members of First Church of Glastonbury.

A lifelong volunteer, Mary co-founded the Glastonbury Robotics and Engineering Club, which grew the number of competitive robotics teams in town to the largest in Connecticut. She also mentored the high school robotics team. As a result of these efforts, Glastonbury now hosts both the FLL and the FRC state championships, as a recognition of the strength of the robotics program in town. Mary also serves on the Metropolitan District Commission.

Citizen Questions

The range of response: strongly agree, agree, neither agree nor disagree, disagree

What are the three greatest challenges facing the community, and how will you address them?

Budgets, protecting New England architecture, and preserving our open space and farms. Inflation is quite high the last several years. We need to look at our budgets so they meet the needs of the town while also ensuring they don’t make it unaffordable for people to stay here. Growth comes with both positives and negatives. The Town Council doesn’t vote on most developments in town, but we do establish the regulations that the Plan and Zoning Commission uses when deciding what to approve. We should look at our zoning regulations to ensure that they are meeting the needs of our community and protecting our charm. Our open space and farms make our community special. We need to continue to preserve what we can’t make more of-land.

Zoning ordinances in town do not allow for adequate supply of housing across the income spectrum.

Neither agree nor disagree. While much of the recent new developments in town have been large houses, Glastonbury has a wide range of housing options. There is advocacy work that needs to be done at the state level to make updates to 8-30g. This state regulation removes all local control developments that meet the criteria. The formula used to calculate how much affordable housing exists also needs to be updated so it doesn’t discourage development of smaller housing.

Towns should implement programs to remove food waste from the trash stream.

Neither agree nor disagree. The town has a program for removing food waste from the trash stream. It is very popular. We should take a look at the success and see how it could be expanded while being mindful of cost.
