Julie’s Biography in Glastonbury Life
I have lived in Glastonbury for over 20 years and consider myself to be a dedicated community volunteer. My background in education made me a natural fit to serve on the Board of Education. I have served on the Board of Ed for eight years and am looking forward to serving again. I am currently Vice Chair, and also represent the Board on the Capitol Region Education Council, Youth and Family Services Commission, the Parent Teacher Student Organization and the Glastonbury Education Foundation. I am the President of the Historical Society of Glastonbury and I am proud that we have a museum and a variety of programs which provide education and insight to community members of all ages. I volunteer with the GHS Crew Team and have always been proud to volunteer with the PTO at every school which my children attended. This has given me a direct line to interact with parent leaders at each school and the insight into unique challenges and strengths at each school.

I am running for office this year because I continue to be interested in, and concerned with, providing the best opportunities for all of our students and ensuring that all of our graduates are best prepared for our changing global economy and diverse workforce needs. More recently, it has become apparent that providing our students and staff with mental health supports are an intrinsic part of providing each student and staff member with the ability to meet challenges and succeed. The experience I have gained being on the Board of Education and as a parent of four students who have gone through the Glastonbury Public Schools has given me insights into the strengths and talents of our staff and educators and has provided me with the opportunity to have a unique perspective on the many needs and successes of our students.

We will stand up to any attempts to ban books that have otherwise been determined by our educators as being age-appropriate to GPS students.

Julie’s letter in the Glastonbury Citizen 2022

My involvement in other community activities keeps me informed about the views of many of our citizens and gives me insight into the many diverse perspectives and views our residents have about our schools. It also provides me with the opportunity to listen to concerns and share the many successes of GPS.
I support an inclusive school environment where every student can find books that reflect their life experiences and where every child feels welcome and ready to learn. I intend to continue to focus on providing fair, inclusive and responsible leadership for our town. I will be responsive to parent input and concerns. I look forward to working with elected and appointed officials, professional staff and community members to respond to the changing needs of our students and our community in the most cost effective and responsible manner. Citizen Questions

If elected, what one objective would you like to see the town achieve or work toward?

I would like to see both the town and the Board of Education continue their work to be an inclusive, welcoming community which supports schools that offer a diverse offerings of books, texts, classroom opportunities and clubs and sports that give every child the chance to see themselves as a part of the school community, the opportunity to excel, the ability to explore their interests, challenge themselves academically and personally and become a thoughtful, informed, curious, responsible citizen of Glastonbury.

What insight or oversight should the Board of Education have concerning the district’s curriculum?

The Board of Education has oversight over the district’s curriculum. The Curriculum Committee meets to go over changes or updates to the various curricular offerings and has the opportunity to ask questions of the administrators, ask questions and make suggestions for further review. Many parts of the curriculum are designed to fulfill state or federal mandates regarding specific educational content or goals for students. The Board of Education tasks the superintendent with hiring educated, thoughtful and experienced administrators and curriculum directors to develop a robust, diverse and innovative curriculum for our students.

What is the most important responsibility of the Board of Education?

Members of the BOE should be responsive, thoughtful and proactive community members who constantly focus on ensuring that all of our students are provided with an excellent education that responds to their diverse needs, abilities and strengths while ensuring that the district is offering our children a variety of class offerings and opportunities that prepare them for careers and workforce requirements.
